Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community." Find more information on the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) website.

CERT Training Class #1
City of Castle Hills First CERT Training class  - June 12, 13, and 14, 2015

"Our first Community Emergency Response Team training was a HUGE success! The students were top notch as were the instructors. Our first class consisted of 16 citizens, both from Castle Hills and surrounding neighborhoods, as well as being joined by several boy scouts for a portion of the training that were working on merit badges. We keyed in on a wide variety of topics that could happen in a major catastrophic event, including the Incident Command System, basic first aid and triage, search and rescue techniques, psychology of disaster victims and how to deal and cope with them, terrorism and fire safety and actual using the extinguishers on small fires. Our classmates were very pleased with the training and are actively looking into starting our own Castle Hills CERT team. San Antonio is hosting a CERT training class every Wednesday in October and the first Wednesday in November with classes held from 6 pm- 10 pm at the San Antonio Fire Training Academy located at 300 South Callaghan Rd just north of Hwy 151. Castle Hills will be hosting another weekend class in early November as well. If you would like to attend either of the training sessions and become a part of our new team, please call Fire Chief Jerry Riedel at  210-342-2341 ext. 217 or send an Email. My sincerest thanks to all the participants and instructors that helped this past weekend and also to the McGimsey Boy Scout Park for allowing us to use their facilities."
